Heat Wave

10 Jun

It has been sweltering in Brooklyn this week. The air is so thick that it feels like walking through jello to get to the subway. Although the bees keep the center of the hive at 95 degrees, they must have been hot today. After work I went to check on the water situation and found the “porch” filled with bees.

There was so much activity I had to stop and watch for a while. Deb has “installed” a viewing area aka a 50 gallon bucket next to the hive so that you can sit and watch the coming and goings.

The comings and goings

There were so many bees out front that some bees were crowd surfing, others had to hover before they could enter with their amber filled pollen sacs, and some bees had to hang out on the side of the hive.

I picked some lettuce from the garden right before the storm started and noticed that the bees had already begun to retreat inside. I went out later when it stopped raining and didn’t see a single bee on the porch. They must hate the rain as much as Mooch.
